Frequently Asked Questions
Starting something new can come with a lot of questions, especially when it comes to learning how to sew, or even if you are continuing to build your skills! This FAQ section covers common questions about classes, materials, skill levels, scheduling, and what to expect during lessons. Whether you’re picking up a needle for the first time or building on skills you already have, the goal is to help you feel comfortable, confident, and excited to create.

Below are my responses to some of the most frequently asked questions:
Will I need a sewing machine?
Do you have any tips when looking for one to use for class?
Yes. Through my classes, you will be building a relationship with your machine. It is important to understand how it responds to changes in settings in addition to learning how to clean, maintain, and troubleshoot the machine when things don’t go as intended.
Your machine must be in good, working condition prior to class. If it’s been in the closet for several years, it will need maintenance before you use it. I can recommend several machine technicians who offer servicing and repairs.
Most full-size sewing machines (not “toy” models) will work for learning how to sew; however, all machines are not the same. The machine you learn on may not be the same machine you use in a year or two. As your skills grow, your needs may outpace what your current machine can perform. If you decide that you want to make large quilts, for example, there are some features that may be more desirable on a larger machine than a basic domestic sewing machine.
Read more about selecting a machine on my Substack or Studio Updates Blog!
Class Supplies will be listed with each class description. Intro to Sewing class will review how to select quality supplies on a budget. Please do not pre-purchase items without understanding of the function and why not all tools perform equally well.
Do I need any other supplies?
Where are classes held?
Students tend to be more at ease learning in a familiar environment, so I come to your home for one-on-one classes and private lessons. If there are multiple students for the same class, arrangements are made for a common location that works for all parties.
Please arrive 10 minutes prior to class start time to allow for setting up equipment and getting settled. Running late? Please contact me. I understand that life happens.
Class duration and recommended pace are noted in each class description. I do not currently offer evening or weekend classes.
I want to make sure my students recieve the right amount of support in their learning, and for right now, this means that currently I do not offer classes for individuals under the age of 18. My curriculum is designed for motivated and independent adults, which allows for more flexibility in my teaching schedule.
Who are my classes designed for?
How does scheduling a private lesson work?
Private Lessons are $35.00 per hour. Private lesson topics should be communicated in advance so that I can come prepared with tools or other resources to best utilize our time together.
I prefer to stay in the Western Prince William County area, serving Gainesville, Haymarket, Bristow, Manassas, and Manassas Park. Some group classes will be available at other locations and will be noted accordingly.
Dates and times will be agreed upon prior to class and are the responsibility of the student to plan accordingly. Communication is KEY! Unforeseen circumstances will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Missing two or more sessions in a multi-part class will result in forfeiture of the class. If classes do need to be rescheduled, you MUST contact me to set the date and time. Your classes are YOUR responsibility!
No refunds. Please reschedule within 3 months.
What if I have to cancel or re-schedule a lesson/class?
In the case that class/lessons need to be cancelled due to inclimate weather, generally, if Prince William County Schools are closed, class will be cancelled. I will reach out to you to reschedule.
